DIY Tax Returns vs Professional Accountants. What You Don’t Know Can Cost You
December 10, 2025With all the recent headlines about HMRC receiving data from Vinted , eBay, many people are understandably worried.
But here’s the reassuring truth:
If you’re simply selling your own second-hand clothes or household items, you won’t owe any tax even when Vinted shares that data with HMRC.
This applies to the vast majority of casual sellers.
Why Second-Hand Selling Isn’t Taxable
HMRC only charges tax when someone is trading as a business or making profits with the intention of earning money.
Selling your own used belongings is not trading. It’s just decluttering.
Examples of tax-free personal sales:
- Second-hand clothes you no longer wear
- Children’s clothes, toys or equipment
- Old furniture or home décor
- Used electronics, phones, or gadgets
- Unwanted gifts
In almost every case, these items are sold for less than they were bought for meaning there is no profit and no taxable activity.
But Vinted/eBay are reporting my sales to HMRC does that mean I’ll owe tax?
No.
The new reporting rules do not create new taxes. They simply help HMRC identify people who are running an undeclared business.
HMRC is looking for patterns like:
- Buying items deliberately to resell
- Making items to sell regularly
- Operating at a profit
- Large volumes of sales that look like a business
If your activity doesn’t match this, HMRC isn’t interested — and nothing will happen.
Selling old clothes and household items does not trigger a tax bill, even if your data is reported.
When Could Tax Apply?
Only when you are genuinely running a business, such as:
- Buying stock specifically to resell
- Flipping items for profit
- Running a regular online shop
- Creating handmade products to sell
But occasional wardrobe clear-outs?
Completely tax-free.
Don’t Panic
You can confidently continue selling your second-hand items on Vinted or eBay without worrying about a surprise tax bill.
